Smart thermostats have been mainstream for a decade now and the marketing claims have, if anything, gotten stronger. "Save 23% on your heating bill!" "AI-powered learning!" "Geofencing optimizes your schedule automatically!"
We install these things weekly. Some of those claims are real, some are real but exaggerated, and some are pure marketing. Here's the honest breakdown for SD&G homes specifically.
The feature that actually saves money
Setback scheduling. That's it. Everything else is marginal.
A correctly programmed setback schedule — overnight setback of 3-5°C, daytime setback when nobody's home — saves the average SD&G household 8-15% on annual heating costs. That's $200-$600 on a typical propane heating bill, or $80-$200 on a natural gas bill.
You don't need a smart thermostat to do this. A $40 programmable thermostat does the same thing.
The reason smart thermostats save more on average is that people actually use the setback feature. Programmable thermostats from the 2000s had clunky four-button interfaces; most homeowners never programmed them and they ran at constant temperature 24/7. Smart thermostats prompt you to set up a schedule during installation and make adjustments easy from your phone.
The savings come from the setback. The smart thermostat is just the delivery mechanism.
What "learning" actually does
The marketing pitch on Nest's learning algorithm and Ecobee's similar features is that the thermostat figures out your schedule automatically.
In practice:
- Learning takes 1-2 weeks of training data to produce a stable schedule
- The resulting schedule is generally inferior to a manually-set schedule because the algorithm can't distinguish between "you were home for an unusual reason on Tuesday" and "your usual schedule includes being home on Tuesdays"
- If your schedule changes seasonally (school year vs summer), the learning has to retrain
Our recommendation: turn off learning, set your own schedule manually, and adjust seasonally. You'll save the same amount with less drama.
Geofencing — real but small
Geofencing uses your phone's location to detect when you're away from home and reduces the temperature accordingly. This adds 1-3% in savings on average, on top of regular setback scheduling.
It matters most for homes with unpredictable occupancy patterns — kids in and out, work-from-home with frequent appointments, etc. For households with consistent schedules, regular time-based scheduling captures most of the benefit.
Multi-zone smart thermostats — when they matter
Ecobee's signature feature is multi-room sensors. The base thermostat is in one room; you place additional wireless sensors in other rooms. The system can be configured to average temperatures across rooms or prioritize specific rooms at certain times.
This is actually valuable for SD&G homes for one reason: the typical SD&G house has uneven heat distribution. The kitchen at the back is always cold because the original ductwork didn't reach that room well. The master bedroom upstairs is always warm because heat rises. A single-thermostat system fights itself trying to keep everything comfortable from one reading.
Multi-room sensors help. We see 5-10% additional comfort improvement in homes with uneven heating, plus some efficiency gain because the system isn't overheating other rooms trying to warm the cold one.
If your home has uneven heating, Ecobee with sensors is worth the premium over Nest. If your home is comfortable from one thermostat reading, either is fine.
Recommendations by use case
For a typical Winchester/Morrisburg/Alexandria homeowner with consistent schedule, no big comfort issues:
Ecobee Lite 3 or Honeywell T6 Pro. Solid scheduling, simple to use, $150-$200 installed. Don't overpay.
For households with uneven heating (cold rooms / hot rooms):
Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium with 2-3 room sensors. The sensor system is the value-add. Total cost: $400-$500 installed.
For homes with multiple heating zones (rare in SD&G but exists in larger homes):
You'll need a separate thermostat per zone. Honeywell or Ecobee both work well; the cheap programmable models are fine for secondary zones.
For rental properties:
Standard programmable, not smart. Tenants don't always engage with smart features and the recurring cost of disposed accounts gets old. $40-$80 installed.
For cottages and seasonal homes:
A smart thermostat with remote app control is genuinely useful — you can pre-heat the cottage before driving up. Honeywell T9 or Ecobee work well. ~$200 installed.
What we won't recommend
A few smart thermostats we don't suggest:
- Voice-assistant-integrated thermostats without good standalone UX. Some early models depended on Alexa/Google for basic controls. Skip these — voice integration should be a bonus, not a requirement.
- Cheap off-brand WiFi thermostats. We've seen too many connectivity issues and firmware abandonment. The $30 savings vs an Ecobee Lite isn't worth the calls when the thing stops connecting to your router.
- Communicating thermostats locked to a specific furnace brand. Lennox iComfort, Carrier Infinity, etc., have proprietary protocols. Great when everything works; expensive headache when the furnace is replaced with a different brand. Stick with universal protocols (24V) unless you have a compelling reason.
Installation — when DIY is fine and when it's not
For most replacements (existing thermostat being swapped for a new smart one with the same control voltage), DIY install is genuinely fine. YouTube has good tutorials. Most jobs take 20 minutes.
When you should call us:
- Existing thermostat has only two wires (no common/C wire). Smart thermostats need a C wire for power. We can usually run one, or install a power adapter.
- Multi-stage system (heat pump + backup furnace, dual-fuel system). The wiring configuration is more involved and easy to get wrong.
- New construction or major renovation where the wiring isn't already in place.
Our thermostat installation service runs $300-$500 depending on complexity, which includes the thermostat itself.
What the savings actually look like
Real numbers from customers we've followed up with:
- Typical propane-heated 1,800 sq ft Winchester home, switched from a 24/7 constant-temperature manual thermostat to a programmed Ecobee: $380 annual heating cost reduction.
- Typical natural gas-heated home in the same situation: $140 annual reduction.
- Switch from a programmed manual thermostat (already using setback) to a smart thermostat: roughly $50-$80 annual reduction. Marginal — most of the savings were already being captured.
The big jump is going from constant temperature to programmed setback. The smart thermostat helps you make that jump and stick with it.
Bottom line
If you've never used setback scheduling before, a smart thermostat is one of the highest-ROI HVAC upgrades you can make. If you're already running a setback schedule on an older programmable thermostat, the smart version is a quality-of-life upgrade more than a savings upgrade — still nice to have, but don't expect dramatic savings.
